The changing work world is taking place at an astonishing pace. There are changes in talent acquisition practices as well as the impact of AI allowing 2025 to be a year of new opportunities and new transformations guided by the need for the workforce to be increasingly flexible and skilled in meeting market demands.

Skills-based hiring is gaining momentum with the thought that workers’ skills and capabilities matter more than their educational background or work history. The focus is on what employees can do and not where or how they learned to do it. This concept widens the talent pool and assists in solving skills shortages, and boost retention. Studies suggest that in 2024, there were 81% of employers that practiced skills-based hiring, up from 73% in 2023 and just 56% in 2022.

The pandemic, which caused disruptive events, the subsequent labor shortages, along with the rise of AI, have allowed employers to realize that an adaptable workforce is one of the most critical components in future-proofing an organization. According to, SHRM CHRO Jim Link, SHRM-SCP states, “We used to think about business sustainability in terms of things, but going forward, we are going to think that way about people. Do we have the right people with the right skills and enough workforce numbers for today and tomorrow?”

There will be some employers that will continue to rethink the college degree requirements for certain roles. Employers who eliminated degree requirements for certain roles advised they have successfully hired one or mor candidates who previously would not have been qualified.
